.eu chooses TelecityGroup for better security

EURid mirrors its technical infrastructure of the .eu top-level domain operation at TelecityGroup’s Amstel Business Park data centre

EURid, the European Registry of Internet Domain Names which manages the .eu top-level domain under a contract with the European Commission, has installed a redundant IT infrastructure at TelecityGroup’s Amstel Business Park data centre in the Netherlands. As a result, the new backup infrastructure will make the management and registration of internet addresses with the .eu extension more robust and secure.

Registrations on the .eu top-level domain began in December 2005, and it currently ranks as one of the top 10 largest top-level domains in the world with over 3,220,000 registrations. Around 2,500 names are added every day, and EURid plans to grow the .eu domain in every European country to top ranking, second only to the national domain.

Such growth objectives require a secure and reliable disaster recovery infrastructure. The previous solution in a small data centre in Prague that functioned as a back-up for the main data centre in Brussels, was judged to be inadequate. The resulting search for suitable data centre capacity in Europe quickly brought EURid in contact with TelecityGroup.

Dirk Jumpertz, Systems & Operations Manager at EURid, states: “TelecityGroup attracted our attention by its quick and professional reaction to our exploratory questioning. Their offer met our requirements in terms of availability, security and connectivity. TelecityGroup’s highly energy efficient state-of-the art data centre Amstel Business Park also complements our desire to become greener, so the decision was easily made.”

EURid’s primary data centre in Brussels will now be mirrored at TelecityGroup’s Amstel Business Park data centre. EURid chose TelecityGroup due to the availability of high quality data centre capacity, including the possibility of having its own suite, extensive network connectivity and proven energy efficient operations of the facility. EURid has begun implementation of its technical infrastructure, which is planned to be operational from mid-2010.

Alexandra Schless, General Manager of TelecityGroup Netherlands, says: “TelecityGroup and the institutions of the European Union have maintained a close relationship for years. In particular, we hold Corporate Status of the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres which we signed as the first network independent data centre supplier in November 2008. We consider it a privilege to now also be of service to EURid, the company that manages the.eu domain under contact from the European Commission.”
